Community World-Changing "Serve Day" Event

We are asking churches to come together for a Serve Day event in their community.

Here is an opportunity to launch the Be a World Changer movement in your workplace, school, church and community so that throughout the entire country those that want to humbly serve those less fortunate can join together and transform their communities by being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

A church would need to take the lead and choose a date (preferably a Saturday) when most people are available. Then put together a Serve Day team that feels called to serve those less fortunate. Their responsibility will be to find out the needs of their community by calling their local town or city representative community service group and coordinate volunteer projects. Examples might include: feeding the homeless, painting a handicapped neighbor's house, playing board games at a local retirement home, working on a Habitat for Humanity home project, cleaning nearby parks, collecting and packaging food at a local food bank, cooking meals for local firemen and delivering the meals to the fire station, etc.

After the projects are determined, start assigning team members various tasks such as:

  • Begin announcing the Serve Day event in your church and start the sign-up process for the different projects
  • Recruit other churches in your area and ask if they might like to join your church
  • Start going to local businesses and ask how they might like to participate either with their time or financially (donate materials, toys or gift certificates to give to orphanages or shelters)
  • On the day of the event start organizing how the volunteers will get food and drinks
  • Depending on the projects determine how the materials for the project will be provided. Example: if it’s a painting project determine who will provide the paint, paintbrushes, drop cloth, ladders, etc.
  • Assign a Project Leader for each project. Their responsibility is to communicate with those volunteers who have signed up for a particular project via email or phone. Often times the Project Leader makes sure the supplies needed for the project are provided
  • Provide T-shirts that the volunteers can purchase so that various teams can be visually identified in the projects they are working on

Be sure to take plenty of pictures and video of the day so you can share it with your entire church and with us!

After these tasks are underway, some other helpful ideas that others churches have done in the past are:

Commissioning Service

The evening prior to the actual Serve Day event you might want to consider a commissioning service where all the volunteers participating in the event come together for a time of worship, prayer and commissioning. In addition, this is a great opportunity to divide the volunteers up in their project teams and have them meet the Project Leader, get their assignments (time, place and other last minute details), and meet the other volunteers involved in the project.

Celebration Service

After the Serve Day event has concluded sometime that late afternoon or evening have everyone meet together and again for dinner and have a time of sharing how Christ was able to work through you and your team.
